“Superb, user-friendly Djing turntables for Mac”

by Nick Mead

 about

It's no secret that most DJs have ditched their turntables and heavy bags full of vinyl for powerful laptops and mixing applications like djay.

But whereas some applications make Djing a mystery and confuse you with too many knobs and meter readings, djing couldn't be easier. In fact, I'd go as far as to say djay is the most user friendly Djing application I've tried on either Mac or PC. It's just so easy to get going, looks great and is a heck of a lot of fun.

As soon as you open djay you are presented with two turntables with your entire music collection conveniently listed next to it. That's one thing I liked from the start - there's no searching around for compatible music - it's all there from the start. The presentation of djay I really liked too - double click on a tune and it turns into a flying piece of vinyl which slots nicely onto either turntable. Much nicer than generically loading an MP3 file into a player.

Most importantly, scratching is like the real thing. Just move the hand cursor over the vinyl and scratch to your heart´s content on the mouse pad. Alternatively, pick up the stylus and drop it any part of the record. All of the genuine sound effects you get with vinyl are here making this a superbly realistic experience. Of course, the crossfader is there but even this can be automated. You can even sync two tracks so that the BPM match before you cross fade. And of course, you can change the pitch with a slider which provides hours of fun turning Michael Jackson into Barry White and vice versa.

There are some advanced preferences relating to appearance, mixing and input/output devices. None of them are clouded in technical jargon though, and are easy to understand. Unfortunately, you can't record your masterpiece mixes in this demo but this is one app I wouldn't hesitate upgrading to so that you can.

djay is what Djing applications should be like for beginners - easy to use, realistic in look and feel but not too complicated with technical jargon.
